LeaderShape 2015
LeaderShape was a leadership experience that took place at Camp Higher Ground Retreat Center from January 4th to the 9th. The program was led by the LeaderShape Institute and it was a genuinely transformative experience. Time was split between learning about different aspects of leadership, developing our own visions and goals for the future, and building a strong sense of community with everyone that participated. Going into LeaderShape I always believed that leadership is about being a person that is kind and supportive and is able to guide people towards a common goal. In that sense, LeaderShape emphasized the importance of those ideas of compassion and integrity in a leader for me. The idea of "leading with integrity" is a concept I really took away from LeaderShape, too. This idea that you should stand by your core values and beliefs and in doing so you are not only a more effective leader but you can inspire and build trust in others. A way I can incorporate that into my life now is even by simply speaking up when I see people acting unjustly or offensively.
To me, though, the most amazing part of this experience is the bond that was created between 60 people that started out as virtual strangers at the beginning of the week. Even barely half way through the week it was incredible how much I had come to care for everyone there. I knew that LeaderShape would help me focus on my goals as a leader but the primary reason I chose to participate in it was because it seemed like a program that created a great community. My experience in it proved that to be very true. Unlike any program I've been involved with before, LeaderShape did an amazing job of creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment in a very short amount of time. What I am trying to take from that experience is that feeling of friendship and community. I am trying to incorporate that kindness and openness into my everyday life as well as in my roles as a leader. It's unfortunate that those behaviors get forgotten in the day to day pace of life but LeaderShape has helped me refocus on how important it is to be the best version of yourself you can be in order to help bring out the best in others.
Tomorrow's Headline
The following is an artifact that represents an exploration into our visions. Part of my vision or goal for the future is to help girls around the world have the opportunity to get an education. This is an "article" I wrote as if that vision has already come true. By doing this, I was able to help solidify what my goals are and what success for me looks like. Knowing this it helps me plan the necessary steps I need to take to achieve my goals and make my vision a reality.
