Year In Review: 2015-2016
My second year of college has certainly been one of opportunities and growth. I participated in the Racial Awareness Program which has given me so much insight into the experiences of others as well as given me a more nuanced knowledge of social justice. I have joined the Student Diversity and Inclusion Council, which is a student led organization that we are getting off the ground in order to promote diversity and inclusion on campus. I have also had opportunities to get involved in research in the fields of the social sciences, specifically political science and marketing. I once again got involved with running a campaign for my peers and friends who I felt would make great presidential and vice presidential candidates. Getting involved with that aspect of student government is always exciting because I love working hard and being a part of a cause about which I feel passionate. At the same time, it is a humbling experience when after putting so much time and effort into a cause we failed to meet our goal, but also it was a resiliency building experience.
Over the past year I've also invested more time into exploring my long term goals. I now want to try to graduate as early as Fall 2017 and start a master program in Marketing at UC. Ultimately, I'd like to work towards my PhD in Marketing. My new research experiences have also solidified my interest in long term work in research.
Moreover, I've continued to build my passion for UHP. I love the community of people that it brings together and I am so grateful for the opportunities it provides. I loved working as a retreat leader last summer and I am so excited to be returning as a retreat leader this summer. Being a leader taught me a lot about myself, too, as I had to interact with a lot of new people at once. I've always known I'm talkative and extroverted but I've learned that becomes my heightened default setting around strangers. That experience also taught me how to be sensitive to other personality types and their needs, i.e., learning that silence and space are totally acceptable facets of a conversation as well.
Overall, after my second year at UC I've made more connections with my peers on campus, contributed to organizations that mean a lot to me, as well as taken advantages of opportunities to further my long term professional and academic goals.
